ZS Callsign Zones

South Africa is divided up into 8 "ZS" zones.

  • ZS1 consists of the Western Cape as well as the North Western Cape.
    Some of the cities in this region are: Cape Town, George and  Knysna. 
  • ZS2 is the Eastern Cape.
    Some of the cities in this region are: Port Elizabeth and East London.
  • ZS3 is the Northern Cape.
    One of the cities in this region is: Kimberley.
  • ZS4 is the Free state.
    Some of the cities in this region are: Bloemfontein and Welkom.
  • ZS5 is Kwa-Zulu Natal.
    Some of the cities in this region are: Durban and Pietermaritzburg.
  • ZS6 is Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
    Some of the cities in this region are: Johannesburg and Pretoria.
  • ZS7 - ZS8 are used for Prince Edward Is., Marion Is. and the SANAE base
    on the Antartic.

South Africa uses three callsign prefixes:

  • ZS is a full license, allowing operation on all HF bands, VHF and above. ( CEPT compliant )
    • Class A Radio Amateurs Exam + Assessment.
  • ZR is a restricted license, allowing operation on all bands except WARC bands with some limitations and power no more than 100watts on HF. ( CEPT compliant )
    • Class A Radio Amateurs Exam only.
  • ZU is a seldom used restricted license. ( Non CEPT )
    • Class B Radio Amateurs Exam.
